1. Don't appear unduly nervous. Project self-confidence. Relax.

2. Despite projecting confidence, do not imply you are a miracle worker. Don't permit yourself to get flustered by the presence of unusual decor, strange lighting, uncomfortable chairs, an interviewer's nervous tapping, or phone interruptions.

3. Avoid being critical of your past organization or specific people, even if your criticism is warranted.

4. Avoid being restrictive as to location preference. Pursue opportunity first, location second. Try to remain as open as possible.

5. Do not dwell on questions regarding company benefits, vacation policy, etc. All companies have a rather large package of benefits including hospitalization, insurance, retirement, vacation, etc.

6. Do not appear to be unsure of what type of position you are seeking. Be realistic. However, for interview purposes, the type of position you are seeking should correspond directly with the type of position for which the interviewer is recruiting.

7. Do not try to pin the company down to a starting salary in the first interview. If you must discuss salary, indicate what you are currently earning and that you are negotiable on a new salary. There are a number of variables that influence starting salary and it is not likely the interviewer could pin point an exact starting figure.

8. Get a "what will happen next" summary or accept an offer on the spot if it is what you want. Always show interest in all job offers.

If you are interested in a position and an offer was not extended during the interview, follow-up the interview with a letter. The letter should not be a standard thank you, but rather a short personal letter which, while not arrogant, again spells out your prime assets and accomplishments.
